Prosecutors said this past week that Butina began a romantic relationship with a USA person who she used to access "an extensive network" of other influential Americans.
Maria Butina, the recently indicted Russian national accused of being an agent of Russia, told the Senate Intelligence Committee earlier this year that Russian billionaire Konstantin Nikolaev had backed her financially, a source familiar with her testimony told CNN.
United States prosecutors have accused Maria Butina of working to infiltrate political organisations, including the National Rifle Association, before and after Donald Trump's election as president in 2016. During a telephonic conversation on Saturday, Lavrov and Pompeo exchanged views on the prospects for further normalizing relations between the two countries "on an equal and mutually beneficial basis", a statement said, Xinhua reported.
Prosecutors say Butina engaged in a years-long campaign as a covert agent for the Kremlin in an attempt to "advance the interests of her home country". The federal case has added to a growing picture of undisclosed foreign attempts to lobby in the U.S. and alleged Russian influence in the political system.

White House: Trump's remarks about Russian meddling misinterpreted
On North Korea, Trump said the Russian president "agrees with what I'm doing and that I'm doing a great job. I will tell you though: "it better not be, it better not be", Trump told CBS News .
Butina made worldwide headlines last week when the Justice Department announced her arrest and a grand jury formally approved charges of conspiracy and acting as a foreign agent.
In jailing Butina pending her trial, Magistrate Deborah Robinson sided with federal prosecutors who argued that the Russian represented an "extreme" flight risk.
Russian Federation has been steadily beating the drum on Butina's behalf.
The timing of the charging announcement, however, came on the same day that a summit in Helsinki between Trump and Putin put a spotlight on accusations of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.
