Theresa May is seeking a one-on-one meeting with Donald Trump to discuss her Brexit negotiating stance, which the president said could sink a much-anticipated trade deal with the USA and steer the United Kingdom in the wrong direction.
Mr Trump's comments emerged as Mrs May pulled out all the stops to entertain the president and wife Melania with an evening of pomp and ceremony at Blenheim Palace.
In an interview the Sun newspaper, published just hours before the two leaders held talks, Mr. Trump chided the "very unfortunate" results of the Prime Minister's proposals for Brexit and her negotiating tactics as Britain prepares to leaves the European Union in March next year.
The US president said the former foreign secretary, who resigned on Monday in protest at the Prime Minister's Brexit plan, had been "very nice to me".
In the interview, which took place at the U.S. Embassy in Brussels, the president also lashed out at the Muslim mayor of London, saying he had done "a bad job".
