The mother who went viral for confronting Pruitt at a restaurant with her toddler in her arms said she felt "unrestrained glee" after Pruitt's resignation that was quickly put out by Wheeler's replacement. Murray also suggested slashing the number of EPA staff in half.
Sen. Tom Carper, the top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee, said Pruitt made the EPA "a punchline".
On Tuesday, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley called the mounting ethical questions facing Pruitt "troublesome" and said "these things matter to the president as well, and he's looking into those".
In his resignation letter today, Pruitt told Trump that "it is extremely hard for me to cease serving you in this role first because I count it a blessing to be serving you in any capacity, but also, because of the transformative work that is occurring".
Pruitt mechanically praised the President, calling him "brilliant" and a "political revolutionary", in the Post's words. Pruitt's resignation came days after two of his closest advisers spoke to House oversight committee investigators and revealed new, embarrassing details in ethics scandals involving Pruitt. Trump publicly defended Pruitt and praised his job performance as recently as early June.
Several environmental agencies also cheered Mr. Pruitt's exit.

It's unusual to see Germany struggle as much as they have, but the level of all the teams is strong. It just wouldn't be authentic for what we've been trying to build for the last two years".
While Wheeler may find it hard to accumulate the same number of ridiculous scandals as his predecessor, many pointed to the fact that he hosted fundraisers for GOP senators while they were evaluating his nomination for deputy EPA administrator as clear evidence of his contempt for basic ethical standards. Wheeler lobbied on energy and environmental issues for the firm, including climate change policies and on the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009.
Wheeler is a Butler County native and Case Western Reserve University graduate who formerly worked for Ohio GOP Sen. "We can't afford more pollution and asthma attacks - our children's health and their future depends on it". Wheeler was first rumored to be chosen for the EPA in March 2017. The headline of the article reads "Who is Andrew Wheeler (And Why You Should Be Afraid Of Him)".
"Pruitt abused power in a disgraceful way by using the job for perks and trying to enrich himself and his family", Hurlbut told GTM.
"We have in Andrew Wheeler someone who has made a career out of trying to block everything we've done to try to protect our children from the growing dangers of climate change - a person who has made a career out of trying to push back against common sense safeguards to protect the air we breathe from risky chemicals like mercury, arsenic and others", says Bob Deans of the Natural Resources Defense Council.
"EPA continues to discuss this assessment with our agency program partners and have no further updates to provide at this time", EPA spokeswoman Kelsi Daniell told Politico.
