McCabe was accused by the Justice Department's inspector general in April of having lied to federal investigators and Comey on four occasions about improperly authorizing the disclosure of sensitive information to the media.
Initially, the White House cited a recommendation from Rod J. Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, who criticized Mr. Comey's handling of the conclusion of a separate investigation into whether Hillary Clinton mishandled classified emails. McCabe's notes, though, suggest Trump told Rosenstein before he authored the memo to mention Russian Federation - though it was unclear in what respect, according to a person familiar with the matter. Rosenstein has since said that he did not intend his letter to be used to justify Comey's firing. "He was insane, a real nut job", Trump said during the May 10 meeting, according to the newspaper. He regularly refers to the ongoing special counsel investigation helmed by Robert Mueller as a "witch hunt". "Both the OIG and FBI OPR reports concluded that Mr. McCabe had made an unauthorized disclosure to the news media and lacked candor - including under oath - on multiple occasions", Sessions said in a statement. If Trump needed a cover story, it would have been to distract away from the Russian Federation probe as a proximate cause of Comey's firing.
Trump's legal team has said that Mueller is working on a report addressing whether the president obstructed justice.

Egypt optimistic over Salah's World Cup chances
The Egypt forward was hurt Saturday when he tangled with Ramos, who grabbed Salah chasing the ball and held on to his right arm. It's impossible to say whether things might have been different for Jurgen Klopp's men had the 25-year-old stayed on the pitch.
He played clips of MSNBC's Chris Matthews, Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) and New York Times journalist Michael Schmidt reacting to the news of the memo, saying that their reporting was full of "lies, hysteria and breathless reporting of so-called news".
He also said "leaks concerning specific investigative steps the U.S. Attorney's Office has allegedly taken are extremely disturbing".
Anyway, then it was back to tweeting about the "spy" in his campaign (there was none) and demanding a phone call from a CEO (how old are you, and do you know you're the president?). Hillary Clinton got that.
"He fired Comey because Comey would not, among other things, say that he wasn't a target of the investigation", Giuliani said earlier this month on Fox News "Hannity."
"He's going to make the appropriate decisions, and if anything that I did winds up being relevant to his investigation then, as Director Mueller and I discussed, if there's a need from me to recuse, I will", he added.
