President Muhammadu Buhari has joined the world to pay tribute to the wife of Late South African leader Nelson Mandela, and South African anti-apartheid icon, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, who he described as a huge loss to Africa.
A longtime stalwart of the ruling African National Congress, or ANC, political party, Madikizela-Mandela was a member of South Africa's parliament at the time of her death.
The couple divorced in 1996, two years after Mr Mandela became president in South Africa's first all-race elections, with Mr Mandela accusing his wife of infidelity.
Madikizela-Mandela always was aware of the danger of being in the shadow of her husband's all-encompassing personality.
1936: Born on September 26 as Nomzamo Winifred Zanyiwe Madikizela in the Eastern Cape province. Madikizela-Mandela told him of the changes taking place in his homeland and became his often outspoken and controversial public voice.
Blamed for the killing of activist Stompie Seipei, who was found near her Soweto home with his throat cut, she was convicted in 1991 of kidnapping and assaulting the 14-year-old. "But look what came out", she said.
Following the announcement of her passing, the Mandela family released a statement about the late matriarch.
"She was a voice for the voiceless", said Ramaphosa.
Meanwhile, the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation has described Madikizela-Mandela as an iconic symbol against apartheid, whose militancy, courage and defiance kept the struggle alive.

Parents to two children, the Mandelas separated in 1992 and divorced four years later after almost four decades into their marriage.
In December 1988, her bodyguards, known as the Mandela United Football Club, kidnapped four boys belonging to another anti-apartheid party.
