Cornerback Richard Sherman has been a major thorn in the side of other NFC West teams since he was drafted.
Richard Sherman could have signed with any team in the National Football League (NFL) after he parted ways with the Seattle Seahawks, but the Pro Bowl cornerback made a decision to stay in the National Football Conference (NFC) West and play for the San Francisco 49ers because he said he wanted to play against his former team twice a year.
He wanted an opportunity to face the Seahawks twice during the 2018 season. The Seahawks officially released him that Friday in order to avoid paying him the $11 million in guaranteed salary he was supposed to get.
He quickly agreed to a deal with the San Francisco 49ers, a franchise that has been reinvigorated by the Jimmy Garoppolo trade. The Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions reportedly were also interested in Sherman. Sherman wasn't consistently performing at an elite level before his injury in 2017, but he was ranked 12th overall among the top 76 outside cornerbacks, according to bleacherreport.com.
"It threw a lot more gas on it, and I appreciate that", Sherman said in a conference call with reporters, via Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

Welcome relief for Wenger as Arsenal dispatch Watford
That kept us out of trouble. "We'll try to do our best in this end of the season and of course [hope fans] come to the stadium". After the victory, Arsenal is in sixth place with 48 points, while Watford sits on 10th with 36 points.
President Trump getting Washington military parade, but no tanks
Earlier it was reported that Donald Trump had asked for a " military parade" and the Pentagon was reviewing potential dates. The Pentagon, however - following its Commander-in-Chief's orders - is marching ahead with plans for the military parade.
"I have a lot of people to put on a show for", Sherman said.
With the signing of Sherman to the divisional rival 49ers, this satisfies the biggest need for the team this offseason, which is that of the cornerback position.
"Now it's like I abandoned them". People are out there burning my jersey. "I didn't abandon anybody", he continued.
Sherman ended last season on injured reserve after surgery to fix a ruptured right Achilles. The initial surgery was to fix his ruptured right Achilles tendon he sustained in November. He had a second surgery to remove bone spurs in January.
