The announcement that the government and Eskom complied with NUMSA's demand to once again delay the signing of renewable energy contracts means that they are sabotaging South Africa's economy and the environment.
"The facts are clear: renewables already cost over 50% less than new coal-fired power, government policy has for years included the closure of coal-fired power stations, the associated job losses are being planned for through numerous processes now under way - most notably processes being undertaken by the national planning commission, electricity price increases are directly related to the extended delays and rising costs associated with Eskom's coal build programme".
Radebe said the usage of different types of energy supply, which includes renewable forms of power generation, is in line with the energy policy.
The R56-billion renewable energy deal has been postponed until March 27 when the matter goes to court.
The NUMSA injunction forced Radebe to agree that the renewable PPAs would not be signed until the issues raised had been subject to a full hearing by the court, according to a statement from the union.

Packers trade cornerback Damarious Randall to Browns for quarterback DeShone Kizer
Clearly, the Packers weren't satisfied with the way Hundley performed last season after Aaron Rodgers broke his collarbone. In addition to the players involved in the deal, ESPN's Adam Schefter says the teams swapped 4th and 5th-round picks.
The projects are valued at about R58 billion and it is anticipated they will create more than 13 000 jobs and add 2 305MW to SA's energy mix.
"However‚ counsel for the Minister informed the court that whilst there is no interdict granted‚ the signing will however be postponed until the 27 March 2018 when the matter is finally disposed of in court". In his response, Radebe said nothing prevented Eskom and IPPs from signing the agreements.
The union claims it will lead to the closure of power plants as Eskom would require less coal to produce electricity, ultimately resulting in job losses.
Hlubi said the union was questioning the intentions. The oldest coal-fired power plants are fifty years old and have already exceeded their expected operational time.
"The Department of Energy will continue to vigorously defend the right of consumers in our country to have access to cost-efficient clean energy that bring much-needed investment in South Africa as well as jobs (especially for women and the youth) and small business entrepreneurial opportunities in our rural communities".
At a media briefing announcing the signing ceremony last week, Radebe said South Africa had reached a milestone following a protracted period of uncertainty.
