The 22-year-old is not only the first athlete to win Olympic golds in both skiing and snowboarding but is the only athlete to have ever competed in both events at this level.
"I was dreaming about this moment since I was a little child", said Ledecka, whose margin of victory in her six runs was at least four-tenths of a second.
"Today I proved it is possible", she said, "and I'm very happy that I have my team around me, which were very professional and supportive today, and all these years they're with me, so I'm very grateful for them".
The Czech is only the fifth person to win gold in two different events at the Winter Olympics and is the first athlete to win golds in two unrelated disciplines. That came seven days after she won the super-G by.01 seconds and shocked everyone, including herself. She's the first cross-country skier to carry the USA flag into an Olympic ceremony since Bill Koch did the honors at Albertville's opening in 1992. She spoke of the jaw-dropping lines that Ledecka carves on Alpine courses, a knack that Ledecka's snowboarding coach, Reiter, attributes to her experience maneuvering on a snowboard, which, because it has no steadying or stabilizing poles, requires seeing a mountain in a more imaginative way. "She never wants to race the girls, and all the guys are like, 'Ester, I don't know if I can do this, '" Trapp said with a laugh. "My plan is to stay with my heart, so for now I think I will do both because I love both", she said.
Ledecka's double medal swoop has earned her the nickname of "Queen of the Games".
To view Ledecka as an outlier might be justified - many elite athletes carry themselves more solemnly - but to dismiss her as a novelty would be wrong.

With Saturday's gold, Ledecak joined Norwegians Thorleif Haug and Johan Groettumsbraten as the only athletes to do a multi-sport double in the same Olympic Games.
"Even underneath the suit, I get goosebumps talking about it", Leif Kristian Nestvold-Haugen of Norway said.
"But because of who Ester is, and how she functions, that is not enough". Everyone was screaming. I thought, "OK, now it's weird".
"Today was a big day for snowboard Ester!".
But going back and forth between both is not easy. She had not worn makeup, preferring to keep her eyes shielded from the roomful of reporters and cameras. "Don't tell my coaches", she reportedly said. "If she had absorbed all the energy from the super-G and just checked off the Olympic medal, we would be having a different conversation today", he said.
But Niskanen attacked early - less than 20km into the race - and held off the competition to win by 18.7sec from Russians Alexander Bolshunov and Andrey Larkov. When reporters grew curious, she explained that winning a gold medal had caught her off-guard.
