Amid federal inaction on gun control, the Democratic governors of Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York and New Jersey have formed a multi-state coalition to better share information and pool resources to combat gun violence.
Four governors have joined forces on gun safety, pledging to share intel.
"Rather than wait for the federal government to come to its senses and pass responsible gun safety legislation", the governors made a decision to form the coalition, Cuomo said.
They'll form a task force to trace and intercept illegal guns in the region and coordinate on potential legilsation, the governors said.
Information on gun purchases, permits, and which guns have been used in crimes will now be able to be shared across four states.

During the conference call, Malloy highlighted the efforts that CT took after the 2012 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, including banning the sale of assault weapons and taking mental health and school safety steps.
Governor Cuomo says NY state is doing something about it. "This idea that we're going to be safer because we have more arms doesn't work very well in Syria, doesn't work very well in Iraq, and probably won't work very well here", he said in the CNN interview. "So we said that we're going to take action". People may be disqualified from owning a firearm for several reasons, including an arrest warrant, order of protection, debilitating mental health condition, or criminal history. "But, even more importantly, a collective of states can take these steps together broaden the reach and impact of commonsense gun safety laws". It is not clear how the other states would act on it, given that the law in CT and New Jersey, for example, expressly forbids firearm purchases only by people who have been committed to a mental health center. The states are also asking schools and higher education institutions to partner together to create the nation's first Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium. The consortium will include researchers in the areas of criminal justice, public safety, public health, public policy and social welfare, according to the memorandum of understanding.
Other governors noted their states have some of the nation's toughest gun laws - and lowest rates of gun violence.
Currently, states are limited to using the federal government's background check system, which does not always pick up violations that lead certain states to prohibit citizens from owning guns.
