Samuel Girard crossed the line first to win gold in the men's 1,000-metre short-track speedskating final at the 2018 Winter Olympics on Saturday in Pyeongchang, South Korea. USA skater John-Henry Krueger got silver in 1:24.864 and South Korea's Seo Yira took bronze in 1:31.619. In the latter stages if the men's 1000 metre final, there was a crash between Seo, Hyo-jun Lim of South Korea and Sandor Liu Shaolin of Hungary.
Girard seemed destined for his first Olympic medal, narrowly advancing out of his semi-final when team mate and mentor Charles Hamelin was disqualified in an incident that involved the 21-year-old Canadian.
Girard posted a winning time of 1:24.650 in the A Final.
As is often the case with short-track speedskating, the men's 1,000 final was a chaotic affair with the three competitors behind Girard and silver medallist John-Henry Krueger of the United States falling to the ice in a tangle. "He gave me a tap on the back". "I tried to protect my spot because I knew it was an easy moment for getting passed on the inside. We'll see but I just don't think I'm done". That's what the referees saw on the replay.
After finding out the results, Girard hugged his coach Derrick Campbell before returning to the centre of the ice with a big smile. I was the guy in the front putting in a good pace that put everyone in trouble fighting to pass me.

Hamelin, the victor of three golds and competing in his fourth and final Olympics, got up and was in Girard's corner when he stepped onto the ice for the final.
"There is just too much traffic and stuff that can go down if you stay in the back, so we both stayed up in the front and it paid off for both of us", Krueger said. An earlier version reported that Canada didn't win any medals in women's snowboard slopestyle.
"I think we played really well in those other games, but we each had a couple key mistakes that really cost us", the Ottawa skip said.
"I don't want to be there when those things happen", Girard said.
