During her visit to the White House last January, British Prime Minister Theresa May invited President Trump to visit the U.K. With Trump reportedly concerned about the mass protests his presence would undoubtedly spark in London, the trip was postponed several times.
The U.S. State Department sold its building in tony Grosvenor Square to a Qatari real estate firm in 2009, and is relocating to a new site across the Thames, in South London.
President Donald Trump said Thursday evening that he will not be visiting London next month due to his dissatisfaction with the "bad deal" the Obama administration agreed to over the next location for the US embassy.
And indeed, it's not clear that Trump's allegations of a "bad deal" on the new embassy passes the sniff test.
Trump's trip was not the full state visit offered by prime minister Theresa May, for which no date has so far been set.
However, Britain's The Guardian newspaper pointed out that the decision to move the embassy was announced in October 2008, over a year before Obama was elected.
He concluded: "Let's hope that Donald Trump also revisits the pursuit of his divisive agenda".

However, Huawei will continue on its determined campaign to pierce through the lucrative North American market. Huawei told CNBC in a separate statement that it will launch new products for the USA market on Tuesday.
However, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson accused Mr Khan and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn of putting the UK's "crucial relationship" with the United States at risk by opposing the visit.
The opposition to his visit meant the original plan for an official state visit - which would include a chance to meet the Queen - was lowered to just a "working visit" that carries much less importance.
The problem with that rationale is that Trump's tweet misrepresented the history of the U.S. Embassy move.
As President Donald Trump waxed lyrical about why he would be axing plans to travel to Britain to open a new American embassy, a waxwork stand-in appeared more than ready to oversee the launch. "He has been to countries all over the world and yet he has not been to the one with whom he is closest". "We are really pleased to have the American embassy there, it's fit for objective".
British MPs have frequently demanded cancellation of the state visit of US President Donald Trump, after his controversial decision to crack-down on immigrants from Muslim majority nations.
Stand Up To Racism has called a demonstration outside the (current) USA embassy on 20 January.
Donald Trump has cancelled his visit to the United Kingdom in February as a result of fears that his trip will be met with wide-scale protests.
