MANTIS OF THE ARTIST
Nietzsche saw art as the struggle of man against negative forces of society, using the imagination, which he considered pure product of the Ego. Art for him was the ultimate form of clear lucid thought.
Schopenhauer viewed art as a device of pleasure. Tolstoy looked at art as propaganda and Oscar Wilde held the "Art makes Life" doctrine, meaning that sometimes art is more real than reality itself.
I think the most Pure Art is surrender to simple visual interest. See what you want to see, what interests you most. Stricter notions of art tend to confine it to moral constraints of sublimation. When art is taken as a quasi-religion, which can only be managed and interpreted by almost sacerdotal elites, it invariably represses the imagination- Even when it comes to simple blemishes, strokes and pints.
