Ever wonder what Cinco De Mayo celebrates? Like most, you may have confused it Mexico's Independence Day, and / or enjoy celebrating through copious amounts of margaritas and tacos, but in actuality the day represents Mexico's victory over the French army at Puebla in 1862.
The Battle of Puebla was a result of various hardships Mexico had faced with gaining its independence from Spain in 1821. Its own country, Mexico struggled with political instability and economic problems forcing Mexico to borrow money from foreign nations as a means of survival. Mexico had heavy debts owed to Spain, Great Britain, and France. Thus, France took Mexico's inability to make sufficient and prompt repayments as an opportunity to seek expansion within Mexico. What would have seemed like an easy victory for France, with a well-trained army of 8,000 against Mexico's 4,000 men, Although France was able to eventually capture Mexico City and establish a ruling, the Battle of Puebla caused a great boost of morale for Mexico and formed a sense of unity in the nation, arguably helping the country to eventually expel the French from Mexico. p>
