The U.S. News & World Report Tuesday unveiled its list of best hospitals across the country, as well as rankings in the state and areas of "high performance". The specialty rankings mean that Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is among the top 50 hospitals in the nation in these specific areas. The company changed its methodology to lean less on a hospital's reputation and more on hard numbers last year - the same year the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services introduced its five-star rating system based on data alone.
The university's neurology and neurosurgery specialty was among four for which UIHC earned "high-performing" marks in the new report, along with geriatrics, kidney disorders and nephrology, and pulmonology. UW Medicine's four hospitals - Harborview Medical Center, Northwest Hospital & Medical Center, University of Washington Medical Center and Valley Medical Center - admit more than 64,000 patients each year.
U.S. News evaluated 4,500 hospitals for the latest rankings.

Overall, U.S. News & World Reports compared nearly 4,500 medical centers around the country in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions.
The Best Hospitals Honor Roll is a distinction awarded to 20 us hospitals that deliver the highest quality of care across a range of specialties, procedures and conditions.
"The 50-point spread between our closest peer group that was (tightly grouped) at No. 2-4 was what really jumped out at me", Noseworthy said.
U.S. News compiles the rankings by looking at objective measurements of care - such as whether fewer patients die of certain conditions at the hospital than would be expected based on national averages - and patient safety.
Despite the abundance of medical rankings, those submitted by U.S. News are known to carry a lot of weight, he said, because of how thorough and long-running they are.
