Several Fed officials felt the reduction in the balance sheet and associated policy tightening "was one basis for believing that.the target range for the federal funds rate would follow a less steep path than it otherwise would". Fed members have previously said that the central bank could begin to unwind the $4.5 trillion in bonds it holds on its balance sheet as early as this year.
"A few participants also judged that the case for a policy rate increase at this meeting was strengthened by the easing, by some measures, in overall financial conditions", according to the minutes.
In other economic news, new orders for U.S. manufactured goods fell by more than expected in the month of May, according to a report released by the Commerce Department on Wednesday. This is because a rate hike can have an impact at a lag.
