Apple is to abandon its TouchID fingerprint recognition system, altogether in the OLED version of its iPhone 8 smartphone, according to a StreetInsider report on predictions made by KGO analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
Whether it launches as soon as the iPhone 8 remains to be seen, but it is Apple's intent to replace the fingerprint sensor, according to the report. As with past iPhone S releases, the 7S and 7S Plus are expected to feature refreshed specifications from the iPhone 7.
It's believed Apple will release two iPhone models in September, an iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus that will be minor updates to Apple's current iPhone 7 offerings as well as an all new, dramatically redesigned iPhone 8.
"We predict the OLED model won't support fingerprint recognition, reasons being: (1) the full-screen design doesn't work with existing capacitive fingerprint recognition, and (2) the scan-through ability of the under-display fingerprint solution still has technical challenges". Or, it could simply be a lot less secure if Apple forgoes the need for some kind identity authentication and simply allows users to, perhaps, double-tap the virtual home button to authorize a payment.
Its quite possible that there wont be a fingerprint reader, it certainly wont be under the display. This will make the product instantly recognizable in the hands of its premium product customers.
