A 4-year-old boy died a week after he went swimming from a rare danger known as dry or secondary drowning.
Both cause the same symptoms which include coughing, chest pain, trouble breathing and fatigue.
But as the weather heats up, parents should be aware of the frightening hazard for young children.
Dry drowning and secondary drowning are rare medical conditions resulting from the inhalation of water. The cause of death was dry drowning, and every parent needs to educate themselves on this tricky and quiet danger.
His father told KTRK the boy woke up suddenly a few hours later and "took his last breath".Читайте также: Humboldt County moves to shore up voting systems after election contractor hack
It seemed impossible - mum Tara Delgado said he was only in knee-deep water. "When she came in, she told us it's what's called dry drowning". Of course, making sure kids can swim also helps prevent classic, "regular" drowning - which is the second leading cause of accidental, injury-related death for children, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Secondary drowning escalates over 24 hours and it is not always clear who might experience it.
The liquid never reaches the lungs, as per normal drowning, but it causes the vocal chords to tighten, eventually shutting down the airway.
"It's very unusual for the child to have absolutely no symptoms, but they may go to bed and in the middle of the night have trouble breathing", Purva told USA Today.
Funeral services for the boy are scheduled for Saturday in Texas.
"Heartbreaking. My sympathy for the family, they are living a parent's worst nightmare", one Mad World News reader commented on the site's Facebook page.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
