Gov. Mark Dayton announced Monday that he has signed onto the U.S. Climate Alliance, a coalition launched last week when Trump announced that he plans to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate accord. The idea of the Alliance is to serve as a way for other states interested in dealing with climate change to coordinate, according to a press release.
The founding members of the U.S. Climate Alliance were the governors of Washington, New York and California.
In his Thursday announcement on pulling the USA out of the Paris agreement, the president said that the climate accord was more about giving other nations a "financial advantage" over the US than it is about the environment.
Virginia is one of 13 states and territories that are committed to upholding the Paris Climate Agreement. Importantly, it is also out of step with what is happening in the United States.
"I am proud to join this bipartisan group of governors and reaffirm Vermont's commitment to fighting climate change through the U.S. Climate Alliance".

Elected officials and private sector leaders across the USA plan to defy President Donald Trump's position on climate change.
He says climate change - and specifically sea level rise - is a "very real threat" to the First State, the country's lowest-lying state with 381 miles of coastline.
In addition to California, Washington and NY, the other members of the U.S. Alliance are Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Oregon, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont and Virginia.
"The "We Are Still In" coalition pledges to ensure that despite the country's exit from the agreement the United States will continue to be a leader in reducing greenhouse gas emissions".
The U.S. Climate Alliance will also act as a forum to sustain and strengthen existing climate programs, promote the sharing of information and best practices, and implement new programs to reduce carbon emissions from all sectors of the economy.
