NY [U.S.], April 26 (ANI): Uber is literally aiming for the skies as the tech company announced that it has struck partnerships with the cities of Dallas and Dubai to demonstrate a network of flying cars by 2020.
"Imagine traveling from San Francisco's Marina to work in downtown San Jose - a drive that would normally occupy the better part of two hours-in only 15 minutes", the company said. "Urban aviation can replace long-distance commutes". The startup is backed by Google cofounder Larry Page.
Uber's approach is different, however. Holden noted the cost would fall below variable costs of long-term auto ownership.
In the near future you could use your Uber app to select not only and Uber X, Uber XL and the other selections but an Uber Elevate flying option too. A judge ruled Tuesday that Anthony Levandowski, head of Uber's self-driving effort, must testify in the lawsuit filed by Waymo. Additionally, it has also partnered with ChargePoint, an U.S. electric vehicle charging station maker, to develop an exclusive charger for its network. And to make it possible, Uber said it's partnering with a handful of aircraft manufacturers and real estate firms, as well as with ChargePoint Inc to lay an electric charging network for these flying cars. The safety issues seem to be the most pressing at the moment considering the scenario of multiple proposed aerial vehicles in the skies above a heavily populated urban region. The vehicle will then start automatically, take off and cruise to the set destination before descending and landing in a specific spot.
Holden said they would target pricing at "roughly the cost of UberX".
