"We will be asking Secretary Perdue to establish a task force that does a 180-day review of regulation and policy, legislation that unnecessarily hinders economic growth in the agriculture area", said Ray Starling, the special assistant to the president for agriculture.
"Governor Perdue - who grew up on a farm, worked as a veterinarian, and eventually led a state with a $74 billion agricultural sector - has been around agriculture his entire life". He was governor of Georgia from 2003 to 2011. He also promised to reach out to Democrats, and several Democratic senators have said they will vote for him.
"His experience as a farmer and a governor of an agriculture state make him an ideal candidate to run the country's leading authority on food, agriculture, natural resources, rural development, and nutrition policy", Schemm said.
Democrats surely think so.
The House and Senate have been able to get a head start on the 2018 Farm Bill while Perdue was waiting for his confirmation, but there still needs to be work done. US farmers rely on existing export markets for much of their livelihood, and they deserve access to new markets wherever it makes sense.

Sanctuary cities threatened with loss of federal grant money
WASHINGTON, D.C. (CBS)- Sanctuary cities are at risk of losing federal money if they fail to comply with federal immigration laws. Other places also insisted they were in compliance.
All this comes as Trump tries to crack down on illegal immigration to the United States, an issue that could leave many farms short-staffed due to their reliance on foreign - and sometimes, undocumented - workers. Pat Roberts, the chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, said Perdue will help facilitate recovery in small American towns.
At his hearing, he pledged to help senators sustain popular crop insurance programmes and fix problems with government dairy programmes.
Perdue, 70, graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine from the University of Georgia, and served in the U.S. Air Force.
"Food is a noble thing to trade", Perdue said. Perdue will race into action, addressing USDA employees on Tuesday morning after a swearing-in ceremony and will join President Trump at an agricultural roundtable discussion at the White House in the afternoon.
Perdue was the last cabinet member to be nominated before President Trump took office in January but there is still one more to be confirmed and that is Alex Acosta, who was second choice for labor secretary after Trump's first choice withdrew. Robert Lighthizer, Trump's nominee for US trade representative, and Alexander Acosta, nominated to head the Labor Department, still await confirmation.
"The U.S. cotton industry also believes that someone from this country's second largest cotton-producing state well recognizes what is necessary to stabilize the U.S. cotton industry", said Lee, who farms near Bronwood, Ga.
