More than a million online viewers watched April deliver her calf in Harpursville, a rural upstate village about 130 miles (209 kilometers) northwest of New York City. About 45 minutes after he was born, he stood on wobbly legs while mom helped keep him steady. Some 1.2 million people were watching. Zoo owner Jordan Patch says both mom and calf are doing fine.
Patch called the birth "unnerving" to watch.
But it is a normal part of the birth process in giraffes, and it helps the little one break out of the enclosing amniotic sac and begin breathing on its own, Laurie Holloway, a spokesperson for the Dallas Zoo, told Live Science in 2011, following the delivery of a giraffe calf at that zoo. People around the world have been tuning in daily, with some growing impatient as the pregnancy seemed to drag on.
In a Facebook post Sunday, the staff at Animal Adventure Park noted that April's new son stands at 5 foot 9 inches (175 cm) from the bottom of his hoof to the top of his head.

It is the first time a calf has been born in the animal park. The calf will weigh around 150lb and will be about 6' tall at birth. A GoFundMe fundraiser page that initially set a goal of $50,000 sat at more than $134,000 by Saturday night.
The wait for April to give birth raised global interest with a livestream leading up to the birth.
"For about 10 days, you can vote on any name or names you choose for April's new calf", according to the website.
April and the baby will be introduced to the public when the park opens for the season next month.
