The Dalai Lama's week-long trip to Arunachal Pradesh state, an eastern Himalayan region administered by India but claimed by China as "southern Tibet", has infuriated China, where the Nobel Peace laureate is considered a risky separatist.
But they have lately taken on an icy chill, with Chinese leaders furious over the Dalai Lama's visit to the northeastern Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, which China claims as its own.
"Under India's illegal rule, the residents of Southern Tibet live hard lives, face various kinds of discrimination, and look forward to returning to China", the official China Daily said in an opinion piece on Wednesday (12 April).
There's no let-up in a torrent of warnings from China over the recent visit of the Dalai Lama to Arunachal Pradesh, which concluded yesterday. China refers to Arunachal Pradesh as Southern Tibet.
China has lodged a diplomatic protest to India over the visit and a number of articles and editorials in the Chinese state media have attacked the spiritual leader over the visit. The rebellion ended in a bitter loss for the Tibetans, and the Dalai Lama fled Tibet to seek refuge in Dharamsala, India along with many of his followers.
He said he will organize a conference to discuss the issue of the next Dalai Lama before the end of this year. Perhaps what has accentuated the Chinese anger was an accompaniment in the form of Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju.
Korea fires ballistic missile ahead of Trump-Xi meeting
The United States, South Korea and others call North Korea's space program a cover for its long-range missile development program. Trump has said China must do more to pressure North Korea to halt its nuclear and missile programs.
G7 leaders to push Russian Federation to stop backing Syria's Assad
The U.S. military action has renewed the world's focus on Assad's fate and on Syria's civil war, now in its seventh year. "I think the president has authorization to use force", he said.
Malala named youngest United Nations messenger of peace
This time, the world was listening when she spoke: "I am here to speak up for the right of education of every child". Malala is known as the girl who was shot by the Taliban for speaking out against them.
But the Dalai Lama said Chinese officials have no role in identifying his successor because they are atheists and do not believe in the concept of religion.
For Prime Minister Narendra Modi, China has not been a particularly rewarding or uplifting experience despite the fact that early on in his tenure he effusively hosted President Xi Jinping in 2014 in Ahmedabad.
The visit would have repercussions on bilateral relations, warned Lu.
China has also built a "China-Pakistan economic corridor" through Pakistan-controlled parts of Kashmir. It is Delhi's way of letting Beijing know that the latter's machinations on issues that deeply matter to India internationally have not only been lost on the government but may even be prompting a not-so-subtle counter. The Chinese wanted the next Dalai Lama to be born within their grasp so they could control the Tibetans in matters of land and politics. "It showed the Dalai clique has already viewed itself as foreign", he said. "Some indication (about his reincarnation) might come at the time of my death, but now there is no such indication", he said, asserting that China has no role in selecting his successor.
A female Dalai Lama would be unprecedented, but so would the Dalai Lama being reincarnated outside of Tibet.
