The CBS host pressed Tillerson on saying there's been no change in policy regarding Assad, wondering if he was stating that the Syrian president's fate should be determined by the Syrian people.
This week's airstrike "was a message to Bashar al-Assad that your multiple violations of your agreements at the United Nations, your agreements under the chemical weapons charter back in 2013, that those would not go without a response in the future", he said.
Russian President Vladimir Putin also sees the latest United States missile strikes on a military airfield in Syria as an attempt to distract from the mounting civilian casualties in Iraq, the Kremlin added.
"I don't draw conclusions of complicity at all, but clearly they've been incompetent and perhaps they've just simply been out-maneuvered by the Syrians", Tillerson said in an interview with ABC's This Week programme. The Syrian government has denied it was behind the attack.
