In what is being hailed by Israeli media as an "unexpected, unprecedented, and curious move", Russian Federation has said it envisions West Jerusalem as the future capital of Israel and East Jerusalem to be the capital of a future Palestinian state.
Israel declared Jerusalem its capital in 1950, but Russian Federation is the first nation to recognize it as such, according to The Jerusalem Post.
"Moscow reaffirms its support for the two-state solution as an optimal option that meets the national interests of the Palestinian and Israeli people, both of whom have friendly relations with Russian Federation, and the interests of all other countries in the region and the worldwide community as a whole", it said.
After explaining that it is "deeply concerned" about the absence of active negotiations between Israel and the Arabs on the creation of an Arab state in Judea and Samaria, Russia spelled out its stance on Jerusalem.
But as the Trump administration considers whether or not to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, it's worth remembering that while the USA was the first to de facto recognize Israel 11 minutes after its creation, the Soviet Union was the first country to recognize Israel by law.

It added: 'The concrete parameters of a solution for the entire range of issues regarding the status of Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem, should be coordinated at the direct talks between the parties involved.
