Preet Bharara announced on Saturday that he'd been fired from his position as US Attorney for the Southern District of NY, which includes Manhattan, where Donald Trump used to reside and his wife still does.
About an hour after the New York Times reported that he does not intend to step down after being asked for his resignation yesterday, along with almost four dozen federal prosecutors, Bharara tweeted at 2:29 pm - "I did not resign. Moments ago I was sacked", Bharara tweeted Saturday afternoon.
Bahrara met with Trump back in November, when he claims Trump asked him to stay on as U.S. Attorney.
He had been overseeing an investigation into New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico Damon Martinez resigned from office Friday afternoon at the request of U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
He said that Bharara's "integrity, tenacity and commitment to rooting out wrongdoing - whether in the boardroom, the halls of government or anywhere else - will be sorely missed". By asking for the immediate resignations of the remaining U.S. attorneys before their replacements have been confirmed, "the President is interrupting ongoing cases and investigations and hindering the administration of justice", Schumer said. More recently, he's successfully prosecuted over a dozen state officeholders from both political parties.
"The way the Obama administration handled it was appropriate and respectful and classy", he said.
US attorneys are federal prosecutors who are nominated by the president, generally upon the recommendation of a home-state senator, and are responsible for prosecuting federal crimes in the territories they oversee.
One U.S. attorney appointed by President George W. Bush - Rod Rosenstein of Maryland - remained on the job for the entire Obama administration and is the current nominee for deputy attorney general.
The federal attorney's firing capped a standoff with the Trump administration that started when Bharara refused the White House order to resign.
