WHIO reports that when Haley attempted to re-enter her home to call for help, police say she may have tripped on a rug in the garage and fallen. They say they found her twin sister's body in the garage. They were found on Saturday morning outside Ms Haley's home in the small town of Barrington, about ten miles from Providence, at the edge of a street that borders the water.
Police said extreme weather might have been a factor in the women's deaths.

Elderly Rhode Island twins reportedly died Friday night after falling within steps in the bitter cold outside a house. He said he asked doctors to keep them together even after they were declared dead. Temperatures in the region dropped into the low 20s Fahrenheit (below -6°C) that night. John W. "Jack" Haley Jr., who lived at the home on Opechee Drive, died in 1995 leaving behind a wife, Jean, and three children. Haley lived along the Providence River waterfront in Barrington for more than 60 years.
One of Haley's longtime neighbors also described her as upbeat and said she always looked forward to dinner dates with family and friends. He was an Army captain in World World II and was described by the Journal as "instrumental in liberating concentration camps in Belgium".
