Brushing aside objections from Democrats, they will vote today to confirm Pruitt to lead the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
An Oklahoma judge on Thursday ordered the state attorney general's office to release more than 2,500 emails between Pruitt and members of the fossil fuel industry, like Koch Industries and the National Coal Council, by Tuesday. President Trump campaigned on reversing it, and Pruitt was among the state attorneys general who sued to block the regulation from ever taking effect.
Democrats held the Republican-controlled Senate floor through the night on 17 February to put pressure on the chamber to delay the confirmation vote.
The vote was 52-46 as republican leaders used their party's narrow senate majority to push Pruitt's confirmation. Heidi Heitkamp, D-ND, and Sen.
Democrats in the Senate have sought to have the vote on Pruitt's nomination delayed until the emails have been received and reviewed because, they say, the communications may shed light on Pruitt's view of the EPA and how he may run the agency.
Richard Shelby and new EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt.
A longtime opponent of the EPA, he questioned the ability to precisely measure the impact of human activity on climate change and, as Oklahoma's top law-enforcement official, he filed 14 lawsuits against the EPA, which is charged with protecting America's air and water. "I look forward to working with Administrator Pruitt in my role on the EPW Committee to ensure that we protect our environment responsibly, but in a manner that will not unnecessarily stifle job creation and our economy". Trump To Issue New Executive Order To 'Protect Our Country'
Trump's EO bans the temporary entry to the USA of the citizens of seven countries with a predominantly Muslim population. Honestly, it was never hard to fathom the implications of this ban on tourism and business travel to the United States.
Republicans said Pruitt had been thoroughly vetted, and they pushed forward with the vote.
Pruitt's record of opposition to the EPA is set out in years of legal filings.
"We know this because in 2014 Pruitt sent a letter to that same EPA in his capacity as attorney general of Oklahoma".
West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey said West Virginia has a friend in Pruitt. President Donald Trump is attending the luncheon along with other dignitaries after being sworn in as the 45th President of the United States.
But the Senate declined to (or, perhaps, purposely did not) wait for those emails to vote on the Pruitt nomination.
Manchin, for his part, was the sole Democrat to join Republicans to vote in favor of Steven Mnuchin heading the Treasury Secretary and confirm Jeff Sessions as US attorney general.
