According to the report, the team of scientists found zircon crystals that were up to 3 billion years old even though Mauritius is only 8 million years old.
This is not the first time that billion year old rocks were found on the island. In 2013, Lewis Ashwal at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and his colleagues proposed that the volcanic island was sitting on a piece of old, sunken continent.
According to an global team of scientists, Mauritius is a continental fragment, severed from Madagascar as the the supercontinent, Gondwana, split into Africa, India, Australia and Antarctica, some 200 million years ago.
They found evidence for a continental crust beneath Mauritius, which would have been part of the continent "Mauritia" and formed part of the ancient nucleus of Madagascar and India. Now researchers have found what appears to be a piece of Mauritia, dredged up by ancient volcanoes and hidden below the surface.
The lost continent was formed in the breakup of the supercontinent Gondwana, which began pulling apart about 200 million years ago.
A handful of zircons dating back almost 2 billion years had already been uncovered in the island's sands.
We also know that Pangaea split into two supercontinents, Gondwana and Laurasia - the former accounts for most of the present day's Southern Hemisphere landmass, as well as the Indian Subcontinent, while the latter broke into the continents that make up the Northern Hemisphere. Ashwal and colleagues pried the newfound crystals from rocky outcrops on the island, erasing any doubts of the zircons' origins.

Reasons the Tesla Model S Isn't Top-Rated For Safety
It can travel 53 miles in electric-only mode, while the Prius Prime can go 25 miles without using gas, according to EPA estimates. The BMW i3 , a small electric auto that starts at $42,400, also earned good ratings in four out of five tests.
Amazon boss Jeff Bezos to support legal challenge to Trump travel ban
The company is aware of 49 employees who were born in one of the seven countries targeted in Trump's order. Bezos told employees affected by the order that "the full extent of Amazon's resources are behind you".
According to the researchers, zircons are minerals that are predominantly found in granites from the continents and contain trace amounts of uranium, thorium, and lead.
Earlier studies found zircon in beach sand on Mauritius that some argued might have been blown onto the island, or carried from other parts of the world stuck to vehicle tires or people's shoes.
But the find was controversial, because critics argued that these minerals could have blown onto the beach from elsewhere.
"The fact that we found the ancient zircons in rock (6-million-year-old trachyte), corroborates the previous study and refutes any suggestion of wind-blown, wave-transported or pumice-rafted zircons for explaining the earlier results, " said Ashwal.
Alan Collins, a researcher at the University of Adelaide in Australia, told the magazine that several pieces of old continents are being discovered.
The remnants of Gondwanaland that exist today are the continents of Africa, South America, Antarctica, India and Australia collectively.
