Majority of the AIADMK cadres are in favour of electing Sasikala Natarajan as the party's general secretary after the death of former Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa.
Panneerselvam is the first Chief Minister from AIADMK who will not be the party's Secretary General.
Various petitions, including one moved by barred AIADMK MP Sasikala have been submitted in courts over Jayalalithaa's death.
The AIADMK has requested the central government to award the late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa with the Bharat Ratna posthumously. "And then suddenly she was dead". However, Ms. Sasikala had seemingly been reluctant to accept the post of general secretary and had also refrained from appearing in public.
The petitioner, PA Joseph prayed for a judicial inquiry on the circumstances leading to her death.

Chief minister O. Panneerselvam hailed the elevation of Sasikala Natarajan, who had for the past two weeks received serial appeals from senior politicians and officials of the AIADMK to lead the party. The post was earlier held byJ Jayalalithaa herself and is the supreme post in the party. After acknowledging the leaders, Sasikala walked into the residence.
Asking to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, State and Central governments, Justice S Vaidyanathan said on a petition that why J Jayalalithaa's body can not be exhumed.
VK Sasikala didn't attend the meeting either.
The party members paid homage to 711 party members who had died this year due to various reasons. But subsequently, when she lost power, Jayalalithaa disowned him and expelled Sasikala from the household, only to take her back in a few months.
Since a resolution has been adopted, she (Sasikala) has been appointed as the general secretary with effect from today.
