Five people have died after a driver going the wrong way on I-495 in Middleborough slammed into another auto early Monday, according to authorities.
The crash impact caused the northbound vehicle to become engulfed in flames, Anthony Thomas, commander of Massachusetts State Police Troop D, told reporters Monday.
The southbound wrong-way vehicle hit a vehicle occupied by four people that was traveling northbound, said State Police.
The crash is being investigated by Massachusetts State Police and crime scene investigators.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle, a 31-year-old woman, also died.

All lanes on Route 495 northbound in Middleborough are now open after being closed.
