Tesla CEO Elon Musk has warned Tesla store staff to stay away from discounts to drive up sales numbers. The electric auto company is taking more aggressive measures to keep sales of the Model S and Model X strong while it prepares to deliver the smaller, less-expensive Model 3 late next year.
This is not the first time Tesla's Model S came under spotlight on account of such incidents. In August, the automaker added a 100-kwh battery option with additional range.
A Tesla spokeswoman in Palo Alto, California, said the Autopilot system was on and functioned properly in the incident, based on conversations the company had with the driver and authorities. With the third quarter about to close September 30, Brad Erickson, an analyst at Pacific Crest Securities, wrote a research note that questioned demand.
"We're making much more effective use of radar", Musk said during a conference call a few weeks ago.
"We detected aggressive Model S discounting at USA sales centers meant to maximize Q3 deliveries", Erickson wrote Wednesday in a research note to clients.
A Reddit user then claimed that he had been offered a discount too.

In a Twitter message, Musk said "corrective action" had been taken on discounting of new vehicles, which "seems to be limited to a small number of cases".
Musk said there could be discounts to floor models, vehicles that had been used for testing or those that were damaged in delivery.
"I'm sorry for the draconian language, as I am super grateful for your hard work, but there is nothing that matters more than our integrity as a company", Musk wrote. Yet the company remains dogged-and customers and investors remain frustrated-because Tesla rarely meets production goals and deadlines that Musk has set for his vehicles and other projects, even after he revises them.
Deliveries for the quarter will be about 22,000, said Erickson, up 90 percent from a year earlier.
